VinFast Targets Indian EV Market with New Plant, Local Sourcing, and SUV Pre-Bookings

Thoothukudi/Chennai, August 4, 2025 – Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) giant VinFast is fast-tracking its India strategy with a dual focus—deepening local component sourcing and strengthening its retail presence. On the sidelines of inaugurating its new EV manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau confirmed that the company is in active discussions with several component manufacturers in India.

Many existing suppliers are considering shifting part of their production to India, a move that aligns with the global trend of diversifying supply chains due to rising geopolitical uncertainties and increasing costs in China. Notably, a Vietnamese plastic manufacturer has also shown interest in relocating operations to support VinFast’s Indian operations.

The EV maker aims to roll out its vehicles in Indian showrooms later this month, although pricing and the official launch date remain undisclosed.

VinFast signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government last year, promising an investment of up to $2 billion, with an initial commitment of $500 million over five years. The Thoothukudi plant is projected to have a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles annually.

Pham Sanh Chau emphasized that the Indian plant has already received export orders from Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Mauritius, positioning the facility as a hub for regional exports. However, the primary focus will be on meeting the domestic Indian demand.

On a retail front, VinFast inaugurated its second Indian showroom in Chennai, following the Surat opening last week. The 4,700 sq. ft showroom, operated by Maansarovar Motors, is located in Teynampet, making it the company’s largest outlet among the 35 showrooms planned across India in 2025.

VinFast will offer its premium electric SUVs—VF 6 and VF 7—with pre-bookings having officially opened on July 15, 2025. India is the first market to receive the right-hand-drive versions of both models, which will be locally assembled at the Thoothukudi facility.

To support its entry into the Indian EV ecosystem, VinFast has also partnered with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure to create a robust charging and after-sales service network across the country.

With global deliveries projected at 200,000 units in 2025—up from 72,100 units in H1 2025—VinFast is banking on India as a cornerstone of its international expansion.
