Strong 5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Guwahati, Tremors Felt Across Assam, Bengal & Bhutan

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Guwahati at 4:41 PM, sending shockwaves across the region and as far as North Bengal and Bhutan. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake’s epicenter was in Udalguri and had a depth of 5 km.

Residents in Guwahati were seen rushing out of their homes in panic as tremors shook the city. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to property have been reported so far.

Officials highlighted that Northeast India lies in a high seismic zone, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence in the region.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that there was no major damage or loss of life reported and assured citizens that the administration is closely monitoring the situation.

Former Assam Chief Minister and current Union Minister for Ports, Sarbananda Sonowal, took to X (formerly Twitter) urging people to remain alert.

“Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert!” he wrote.

Soon after the tremors, #Guwahati started trending on X, with users sharing images, videos, and personal experiences. This quake follows a 3.5-magnitude earthquake that hit Sonitpur in Assam on September 2.
