Li Auto, one of China’s leading EV manufacturers, has officially relaunched its all-electric i8 SUV after its initial release failed to meet expectations. The brand has now streamlined its offerings, discontinuing the Pro and Ultra variants and retaining only the feature-rich Max version — now priced at RMB 339,800 (~$47,310), a price drop of RMB 10,000.

Originally launched on July 29, the i8 SUV was available in three variants — Pro, Max, and Ultra — with prices ranging from RMB 321,800 to RMB 369,800. Following underwhelming market response and consumer confusion, Li Auto chose to simplify the lineup and pricing structure. Now, customers can configure the Max variant to match Ultra-level features, while still saving around RMB 20,000.
Why the change? According to Li Auto, over 98% of buyers preferred either the Max or Ultra models, with negligible demand for the Pro version. The brand also acknowledged that its initial configuration options were too complex and lacked flexibility for premium features.
Despite not directly addressing the tepid launch — with just 6,000 orders reportedly placed in a recent week — Li Auto appears determined to revamp consumer interest before deliveries begin on August 20.
Performance and Features: Li i8 vs Onvo L90
The updated Li i8 Max packs serious performance. It comes standard with a 97.8 kWh NMC battery, offering a CLTC-certified range of 720 km, and can add up to 500 km of range in just 10 minutes using 5C ultra-fast charging. The dual-motor AWD setup propels the SUV from 0–100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, delivering 536 bhp and 660 Nm of torque.
In terms of efficiency, the i8 boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.218 Cd, outperforming Tesla Model Y’s 0.220 Cd. Energy consumption is a modest 14.6–14.8 kWh per 100 km — comparable to smaller sedans like the Tesla Model 3.
The i8’s direct rival, the Onvo L90 (a sub-brand of Nio), debuted just days later with a more affordable starting price of RMB 265,800 and a standard 85 kWh battery. While slightly less powerful, the Onvo L90 undercuts the i8 in price and started deliveries as early as August 1.
Interior & Tech Upgrades
Li i8 is available exclusively as a six-seater with a 2+2+2 layout. Inside, the futuristic cabin is loaded with dual 15.7-inch displays, a floating instrument screen, cooled wireless charging pads, and Li Auto’s signature Magic Carpet air suspension with four-level adjustability.
The vehicle comes equipped with Li AD Pro for assisted driving, while higher-tier options can include Li AD Max, both enhanced with LiDAR for improved autonomous features.
Conclusion: A Second Chance for Li Auto i8
By refining its strategy, Li Auto is clearly aiming to improve the i8’s market positioning against rivals like the Onvo L90 and Tesla Model Y. With better pricing, simplified options, and performance-packed features, the new i8 Max could still be a strong contender in China’s competitive 300k–400k RMB EV segment.
