World Diabetes Day is observed every year on November 14 to spread awareness about diabetes, its symptoms, prevention, and long-term management. The 2024 theme, “Diabetes Across Life Stages,” highlights that the condition can affect anyone—from children to adults and the elderly. Diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels rise beyond normal, which, if uncontrolled, may lead to complications involving the kidneys, nerves, eyes, and overall health.

Recently, nutritionist Nmami Agarwal shared an informative Instagram video explaining why many diabetic patients struggle to control their blood sugar levels even after cutting refined sugar from their diet.
In her demonstration, she uses a bowl filled with red-coloured water to mimic blood. When she adds a spoon of sugar into it, she explains that avoiding sugar in tea or coffee alone does not help because people unknowingly consume “hidden sugars” through everyday snacks. Items like flavoured yoghurt, ketchup, sauces, packaged snacks, and desserts add extra calories and spike blood sugar levels just like a spoonful of sugar.
Nmami emphasizes that simply avoiding visible sugar is not enough. “If you’re cutting refined sugar, you must also avoid hidden sugar in processed foods because they raise your blood sugar levels the same way,” she says. Otherwise, it’s similar to adding 6–10 spoons of sugar back into your bloodstream without realizing it.
Earlier, Nmami Agarwal also shared simple habits to consume sugar safely:
Tips Shared by Nmami Agarwal
1. Check Nutrition Labels:
Look for hidden sweeteners like sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, and other forms of added sugar that may not be easily recognizable.
2. Choose Healthier Alternatives:
Opt for natural sources such as fruits or dark chocolate, which offer nutrients along with sweetness.
3. Stay Hydrated:
Fruit-infused water helps reduce cravings for sugary foods.
4. Pick Healthy Desserts:
Yoghurt with berries, dried fruits, sweet potato, and fruit salads make delicious and safer dessert options.
As we observe World Diabetes Day, following these small but effective steps can help you take a mindful approach toward managing your blood sugar levels and improving your overall health.
