Fibre, Not Protein, Is the Real Longevity Booster, Says US Doctor

For years, high-protein diets have dominated health conversations, especially among fitness enthusiasts and busy professionals. While protein remains important, nutrition experts are now shifting focus toward an often-overlooked nutrient — fibre. According to Dr Vassily Eliopoulos, a US-based physician and longevity specialist trained at Cornell University, fibre may play a far more powerful role in long-term health than most people realise.

In a January 12 post shared on Instagram, Dr Eliopoulos explained why fibre is gaining attention as a key nutrient for healthy ageing. He pointed out that while many people prioritise protein intake, fibre is frequently neglected despite its wide-ranging benefits. “People are obsessed with protein, but fibre is the real longevity nutrient most of us are missing every single day,” he noted.

Dr Eliopoulos highlighted the strong link between gut health and overall well-being. He explained that fibre feeds the beneficial bacteria in the gut, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids. These compounds help reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation, he added, is closely associated with ageing and several long-term diseases, making fibre essential for maintaining good health as we grow older.

Despite its importance, fibre consumption remains far below recommended levels. Dr Eliopoulos pointed out that most people consume only about half of the fibre their bodies actually need. To support longevity and better metabolic health, he suggests aiming for around 30 to 40 grams of fibre daily. Foods such as beans, vegetables, oats, chia seeds, and other whole plant foods are excellent sources.

Variety, he emphasised, is just as important as quantity. Different types of fibre nourish different gut microbes, so including a colourful mix of plant-based foods can improve gut diversity and overall health. According to Dr Eliopoulos, the benefits of increasing fibre intake may appear sooner than expected. Within a few weeks, many people report improved digestion, more stable energy levels, and better mental clarity.

Summing up his message, the doctor explained that while protein plays a crucial role in muscle building, fibre supports the foundations of longevity. “Fibre may not be trendy, but it’s essential. Protein helps build muscle, but fibre helps build a longer, healthier life,” he said.
