Seattle-based e-commerce giant Amazon has announced plans to trim its corporate workforce by about 14,000 employees as part of a broader organizational restructuring aimed at making the company more AI-driven and operationally leaner.

The decision, confirmed on Tuesday (October 28), comes as part of Amazon’s ongoing initiative to simplify management structures, cut bureaucracy, and reallocate resources toward artificial intelligence innovation and other high-growth areas.
While official numbers place the reduction at 14,000 roles, some media outlets have reported that as many as 30,000 positions could be impacted globally — potentially making it Amazon’s largest round of corporate layoffs to date. The job cuts are expected to affect several regions, including India, where Amazon employs between 1.2 lakh and 1.3 lakh people directly.
In a blog post addressed to employees, Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, stated that the company is “reducing roles in some areas while continuing to hire in others,” emphasizing that the goal is to become more agile in the face of fast-evolving technological shifts.
“While this includes reductions in some areas and hiring in others, it will mean an overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles,” Galetti explained.
Industry experts say this move is part of a strategic correction following Amazon’s pandemic-era expansion, during which it hired over 500,000 new employees worldwide.
Avinash Vashistha, Managing Director and Founder of Tholons, an AI and tech advisory firm, commented,
“This is a course correction to align with Amazon’s AI-first strategy. The company is eliminating redundancy and bureaucracy while shifting toward automation. India will feel a significant impact, especially within divisions like AWS and HR.”
Similarly, Aditya Narayan Mishra, CEO of CIEL HR, noted that such large-scale layoffs underline the challenges tied to AI adoption and automation, even for major global tech players.
Internal sources reveal that the layoff process will begin within days, and Amazon managers have received special training to communicate the changes and handle transitions with empathy.
Galetti further clarified that these reductions are not a reflection of weak performance but a response to a rapidly changing global business landscape.
“The world is changing quickly. This generation of AI is the most transformative technology since the Internet. It’s enabling faster innovation across existing and new markets,” she said.
To support affected employees, Amazon has committed to offering 90 days of internal job search time, severance packages, health insurance, and outplacement services.
This marks another significant moment in Amazon’s corporate evolution as it aligns itself more closely with AI-driven business models and prepares for the next wave of technological transformation.
