A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 flying from Denver to Los Angeles made an emergency landing after its cockpit windshield cracked mid-flight, injuring one of the pilots.
The incident occurred on October 16 aboard Flight UA1093, which was carrying 140 passengers and crew members. The aircraft was cruising at 36,000 feet when the damage was detected.
According to officials, the pilots immediately began a controlled descent to 26,000 feet and safely landed at Salt Lake City International Airport. All passengers were later transferred to another aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, and reached Los Angeles after a six-hour delay.

What Caused the Windshield to Crack?
While aircraft windshield cracks are uncommon, this case has drawn attention due to unusual burn marks seen on the glass and injuries sustained by a pilot.
Photos circulating online reportedly show scorch marks on the windshield and bruising on one pilot’s arm, suggesting the crack may not have been caused by regular structural stress.
The aircraft was approximately 322 kilometers southeast of Salt Lake City when the damage was discovered. Following standard emergency procedures, the crew diverted and made a safe landing without further complications.
Some aviation experts speculate that space debris or a small meteorite might have struck the windshield, based on the burn pattern and the extent of the damage. Normally, Boeing windshields are built to endure bird strikes and rapid pressure shifts, but an object traveling at extreme speeds could still penetrate the protective layers.
United Airlines confirmed that no passengers were harmed and that the pilot’s injuries were limited to minor bruising. The airline has not yet provided details on the official cause of the windshield damage.
Another United Airlines Incident Days Later
Just two days after the cracked windshield incident, on October 18, another United Airlines plane clipped the tail of a parked United aircraft while taxiing to its gate at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
No injuries were reported, and all 113 passengers disembarked safely after a short delay. United Airlines stated that both incidents are being investigated to ensure future flight safety.
