Rare “Princess” Crab Spotted in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park

Park rangers in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park have captured stunning photos of a rare “Princess” crab — known locally as the Sirindhorn crab. This tiny crustacean, roughly the size of a coin, sports deep purple legs and striking white claws, making it one of the park’s most colorful and elusive residents.

The discovery was made near the Panoen Thung checkpoint, just days before the park’s annual seasonal closure, which allows the forest to recover and streams to replenish.

A Precious Gift from Nature

Officials called the sighting a “precious gift,” noting that the crab’s appearance is more than just a visual treat — it’s a sign of thriving ecosystems. These crabs live only in cool, clean freshwater streams, and spotting one means the park’s water quality and forest health remain in excellent condition.

Locals are more familiar with the black-and-white “panda” form of this species, making this vivid purple specimen even more special.

A Message of Conservation

Park officials emphasized that this sighting is a reminder of why conservation efforts matter. “When these creatures return, it means the forest is connected and streams are healthy,” one ranger said.

The timing of the discovery — just before the park gates closed — felt symbolic, almost like a final wave from the forest to visitors. It’s a small creature carrying a big message: protect clean streams, preserve forest corridors, and rare species will continue to thrive.

Kaeng Krachan’s Ongoing Role in Wildlife Protection

Kaeng Krachan National Park is Thailand’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to rich biodiversity. The park’s seasonal closure ensures that wildlife has time to breed, forage, and recover from human disturbance.

Conservationists say that continued efforts to keep streams unpolluted and habitats connected will help ensure that rare species like the Sirindhorn crab remain part of the park’s living treasures.
