Washington, D.C.: Microsoft has asked all its employees holding H-1B and H-4 visas to return to the United States before September 21, 2025, ahead of a new rule that will drastically increase visa costs. The tech giant issued an internal advisory urging affected workers to act quickly, following the Trump administration’s announcement of a $100,000 annual fee per H-1B visa.

According to an internal email obtained by Reuters, Microsoft instructed employees already in the US to remain there “for the foreseeable future” and advised those abroad to return “immediately” to avoid complications.
“H-1B visa holders should stay in the US for the foreseeable future. We also recommend H-4 visa holders remain in the US. Strongly recommend H-1B and H-4 visa holders return to the US tomorrow before the deadline,” Microsoft’s email reportedly stated.
Trump’s Executive Order Raises Concerns in Tech Industry
President Donald Trump signed the executive order on September 19, introducing the unprecedented $100,000 annual fee. This decision is expected to impact tech firms that heavily rely on skilled professionals from India, China, and other countries.
Defending the move, Trump said, “I think they’re going to be very happy.” U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added, “Train Americans. Stop bringing in people to take our jobs.”
The announcement has triggered alarm across Silicon Valley, where many firms depend on H-1B talent for critical innovation roles. Industry experts warn the policy could result in talent shortages and higher costs for businesses.
